Traveling with a Green Card 2007/06/05 14:15 Karma: 0
I am planning to travel to Puerto Rico. I have a Green Card. My passport is currently in Canada being renewed. If it doesn't arrive on time can I travel with only my Green Card?

This is an easy and difficult question!
In theory it should be easy, here is what I found :
"Entry requirements for Puerto Rico are the same as for the United States of America. When arriving from mainland USA there is no immigration control. "
However, I feel that there is always small prints for us green card holders... So you might actually need your passport since I am guessing you are canadian and here is what I found after the first statement:
"Entry requirements for Canadians: Entry requirements are as for mainland USA: Canadian citizens require a valid passport and proof of citizenship. No visa is required."
However, I am not really knowledgeable in this area and to avoid myself some stress, if I were you, I would call Puerto Rico authorities or immigration service in the USA.
I know it is not fun and all, but you don't want to be stuck at the airport...

I'm wondering about this myself, and can't find a clear answer either. As a Canadian citizen, with my passport being renewed, and no way to find out how far along in the process I am, I'm feeling a little nervous. I have to travel to Canada in early August, which will be 15 weeks after I submitted my passport application - the amount of time they're currently saying it'll take for turnaround. But I have to travel. It's my wedding.

well first of all congratulations!
did you try to contact Puerto rico authorities at all?
I am sure somebody has an answer for you.
Just giving a call to the Puerto rico embassy or even the airport authorities might be enough.
Let us know what you find out.
(I am guessing that there is no way you can call the canadian authorities and explain the situation?? when I got married and needed my passport real quick in France I went to my town's townhall and made sure they write a note on my file. It is nothing official, most of the time does not help, but this time it worked!)

Ahh, the days my passport issues were the only issues! And to think it was only last week!!! I learned last night that my I-131 application (for travel while waiting for my green card) never made it into USCIS. Something wrong on the form. Now, not only do I have no passport, I have no travel permission! I had to schedule an appointment in NY to plead my case with someone at USCIS, but couldn't even get the appointment until the 1st of August (supposed to be married on the 11th of August). I guess it's time to tell my mom and dad what's going on.
